Success Story

Melanie graduated from in October and this is her success story. We sat down with Melanie to discuss her recovery and her experience at AFR.

How is different from all of the other facilities that you’ve been to?

It was definitely the MRT training that made the difference — that’s Moral Reconation Therapy. It was the whole presentation. The concept of Moral Reconation Therapy is all about our thinking, what makes us think the way we do, what drives us to think the way we think, and the fact that we actually have control over our own thinking.

This is certainly not my first experience with rehab, but I don’t consider AFR just another rehab facility. I can say with the deepest and utmost respect that AFR is a true recovery center.

Why did work for you?

It was the whole package, which is based on Moral Reconation Therapy.

What was the relationship like between the staff and the clients?

Wow! There appeared to be an obviously genuine sense of compassion from each and every staff member. I don’t know how to put it into words. It is, without a doubt, a vision designed for people like me, people with addiction Success Storyissues. I learned in the initial stages of the program, for example, that the MRT manual in and of itself never refers to alcohol or drugs. It merely refers to our thinking processes. That’s a powerful shift.

Here’s another part of the whole package (and I use the word ‘whole’ literally) that made a huge difference: I have received, as each graduate does, a weekly phone call. Actually, it was several times a week — I received an aftercare call from an assigned aftercare specialist who monitored my daily activities, and part of leaving the AFR program included an in-depth statement on what I anticipated and what I expected upon arrival at my destination after AFR. The aftercare is a follow-up, and it’s magnificent. It keeps me on track, and I still hear from them, of course. Since I am a recent graduate, the intimate aftercare keeps me in touch with my program and gives them the opportunity to chart and graph us graduates to understand what’s working and what’s not working after leaving the MRT training.

How do you feel now that you are sober?

I feel great. It’s definitely a sense of freedom. I don’t think of myself in any sort of bondage — the bondage of the obsession to use alcohol or drugs to save my disjointed and dismembered thoughts. Wow, it’s a glorious feeling.

Would you recommend to other people?

You know, it’s written that all are called and few are chosen. I was one of those who had the privilege of being a part of this program, and I can say, unequivocally, that it has saved my life. Or, better said: AFR gave me the opportunity to save my life.
