Angel DustThe term angel dust is a street name for the anesthetic Phencyclidine (PCP) which is a dissociative hallucinogenic and an analgesic.  Other street names include Peace Pill, Crystal, Flakes and Rocket Fuel.  It is ironic that such an addictive and dangerous drug as PCP is known by such a misleading and innocent sounding name as angel dust.

Dusting People Into Angels

This drug (PCP) has a long history, dating back to World War One, when it was used as an anesthetic during surgery, but was later found to be unsafe and the manufacturer discontinued sales of it in 1957.  In an attempt to get it back on the market, they renamed it Sernyl and  began testing it again as an anesthetic.  It proved again to be unsafe and was discontinued in 1965.  A third attempt to market the drug resulted in it being renamed Sernylan and was promoted as an animal tranquilizer.  It also showed up on the streets in the 1960’s as “Peace Pill”.  In the following years, PCP was proven time after time to be a dangerous drug and for this reason, it is no longer legally used or manufactured in the US.

Those who abuse angel dust for recreational purposes will experience some or all of the following effects:

  • Euphoria
  • Disorientation
  • Paranoia
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of inhibitions
  • Distorted sense of time and space

When angel dust is used in toxic quantities the user will experience profound effects such as feelings of insanity, confusion, paranoia and a dissociative state.  In some cases, where angel dust has been substituted for another drug without the knowledge of the user, an overwhelming sense of panic can occur.  It is important to note that even a low dose of angel dust (PCP) can result in very harmful effects that can last for months.
