Intervention Definition:  A group of family and/or friends gathering together with a loved one and explaining how his or her addiction is not only affecting their lives but the lives of their loved ones as well.  The point of this is to get the addict to admit they have a problem and agree to seek the help needed for it.

Intervention Definition and Process

There are experts at inpatient rehab centers that can work with families on how to successfully perform an intervention, as well as explain all of the benefits that the rehab center can provide for the addict. One of the first steps to begin the process would be to contact the inpatient rehab center and speak with an intervention specialist. When you speak with the specialist he or she will give you the intervention definition that the center typically uses.

They may also help you determine the best course of action to take while the intervention is being planned. In many situations they will ask you to write down positive attributes about the addict as well as how the behavior is having an impact on your life. They may also ask you to write a set of boundaries that you will be placing if the addict refuses to seek the treatment that is being offered to them. Your intervention will most likely be planned to be at a time when all those closest to the addict can be present to make the statements to him or her. The intervention specialist may also be present to insure that the process runs smoothly.

Typically, when the addict enters the room he or she may be surprised and feel confronted. The specialist will do his or her part to make everyone feel at ease to speak freely, as well as to explain to the addict that no one is trying to back them into a corner, but only there out of love and concern for the individual.
