How to Choose a Drug Abuse Rehab Program

There are many things to take into consideration when choosing a drug abuse rehab program.  There are a variety of drug rehabilitation programs available to suit a variety of individual needs.  Drug rehabilitation programs must help the individual discontinue their drug use and help them put the pieces back together.

A good drug rehabilitation program will effectively educate the addict about how to maintain a drug-free lifestyle and will teach them new ways to be a happy, healthy, productive member of society.  Through addiction counseling, therapy, and education the addict will be guided through the recovery process and will be able to become a drug-free contributing member of society.

There are several factors that you must take into consideration before choosing a drug rehabilitation program such as:

  •

  •

  • The age of the individual

  • Insurance options

  • The type of drug being abused

  • History of criminal offenses, if any

  • Friends and family support

  • Number of times the individual has been to treatment before

  • Is the individual psychologically addicted to the substance and will they require behavior alterations?

  • Will the individual most likely suffer from withdrawal symptoms?

After accessing the individual, ask your family physician, counselor or therapist about specific addiction treatment programs that they feel may be most effective for the individual.  Questions you may want to ask about the drug rehabilitation program include:

  • What types of medications, if any, are used in the treatment?

  • Which types of vitamins or natural supplements are used?

  • What is the counselor-to-patient ratio?

  • How does the rehab program manage withdrawal symptoms?

  • How long is the treatment program?

  • Are families involved in the treatment process?

  • What is the cost?

A good drug rehabilitation program will be geared toward the individual needs of the patient.  That means that the drug rehab program will have to consider the person’s age, gender, race, culture, employment, past drug history, criminal behavior and history of physical or sexual abuse.  In choosing a inpatient drug rehab center, you may want to visit the program first and observe individuals within the drug program, observe the staff, view the facilities, etc.  This may help to make your decision a little easier.

Drug rehabilitation programs may include inpatient residential treatment or outpatient treatment.  Most drug rehabilitation programs will include detoxification, behavioral therapy and individual and group counseling sessions.  Drug rehabilitation programs may appear clinical or “hospital-like” in nature; others may appear “homey” and “comfortable.” Some programs may be in a scenic setting close to where you live and work; others may be a great distance away.  Other things you will want to consider is whether or not you will be able to take a leave of absence from work as well as what your particular family needs are.  For example, if you are a single mom supporting a family and you do not have a support system in place to help at home, you may want to consider a structured outpatient treatment program.  However, this would also depend on your specific drug addiction problem.

In most all drug rehabilitation centers however, there is one major goal: to try to get the individual back to a drug-free lifestyle.  This may require more than one drug treatment and sometimes, multiple attempts within a drug treatment center.  However, you should not let this discourage you from seeking treatment for your loved one.  The best way that you can help him/her is to do your research and eventually, you will find a drug rehabilitation center that will suit all of your needs.
