Dilaudid is a prescription opiate-based analgesic that is most commonly used for pain management, but has also been used as a cough suppressant.  It contains derivatives of morphine (hydromorphone) and is a schedule II controlled substance.

Opiates such as Dilaudid produce desirable feelings of decreased pain, a sense of relaxation or reduced anxiety, and euphoric sensations, but there are undesired side effects that occur with overdose that can be life-threatening such as low blood pressure, slow heart rate, difficulty breathing, coma or death.

The total number of prescriptions for hydromorphone increased an alarming 93% over a four-year period in the United States alone.  When considering this number, it isn’t difficult to imagine that many of these prescriptions are carelessly placed in the home medicine cabinet where teens can gain access to them and become addicted.
