Signs and Symptoms

Alcoholism has several signs and symptoms. A person can look for these in order to decide if an addiction to alcohol is present. Alcoholism refers to having intense cravings for alcohol and compulsively drinking even in the face of negative consequences like losing one’s job or going into debt because of their addiction. Here are four major symptoms to look for: cravings and/or strong compulsions to drink, lack of control over one’s drinking, withdrawal symptoms (e.g., nausea, shakiness, sweating, etc.) when not using alcohol, and a development of high tolerance to alcohol (e.g., drinking more than usually and still not feeling a “buzz”).
