Demerol is a prescription pain medication classified under narcotic analgesics, and has been a very important drug in the treatment of patients with mild, moderate, severe, and chronic pain syndromes.

Demerol works by attaching to the proteins that take part in sending pain signals to the brain, and dulls the sensation resulting in the destruction of the pain cycle. The usual range for the pain to go away is from 24 hours to three days from the time the diagnosis is made. Even in long-term patients, the pain could leave in a matter of weeks.
The medication is available in tablet form as well as a syrup to be taken by mouth, with or without food, every three to four hours as prescribed by the physician, or indicated in the instruction pamphlet. Chewing, crushing, snorting, or modifying them in any way can cause serious side effects, even death in extreme cases. The syrup form should be measured accurately with a dose measuring spoon provided with the bottle and taken with half a glass of water. Undiluted syrup can cause numbing.

Demerol should be seen as a treatment under constant monitoring, hence given the length of usage and the intensity of pain, any adverse effects such as sweating, stuffy nose, nervousness, stomach ache, watery eyes, restlessness, withdrawal symptoms, muscle pain, and chills must be reported to the physician.
